Constipation

What is the best way to combat constipation in babies and toddlers? Im also toilet training the toddler and he refuses to go #2's on the toilet because of it.

  • Oranges. Sit them outside on a towel n let them go for it.  Kate (facebook)
  • Prune juice diluted with water for tots and just boiled water for Bubys. seems to work for my 3 week old daughter. Bek (facebook)
  • With a lil bub i used to put a teaspoon of brown sugar in her bottle. Worked every time. Liss (facebook)
  • Is your baby still breastfed?.. if so it’s not uncommon 4 them to go long periods without no2s.. Bec (facebook)
  • This was an issue for my 7 month old after starting solids I had lots of tips from these lovely ladies and it is much better now. I stewed up prunes and she has an ice block of that every few days. She also has lots of fruit...good ones are supposedly pears, kiwifruit, apricots. I keep banana to a minimum. With toddler: lots of fruit, fluids (leave a cup out so he has access to it) and occasional prunes may help. May be worth a trip to the Dr if ongoing. Babyhintsandtips (facebook)
  • Take 50ml of cooled boiled water in a bottle and add a whole teaspoon of brown sugar, shake it to mix and let baby drink it all.
I swear by it, within the hour of giving it to my Son, i am changing a very messy bum! Steph (facebook)
  • Yes i am breastfeeding. He is 4months. I cant get him to suck on a bottle, for some reason he gags on the slowest flow. Maybe a syringe. Thanks so much for your feedback ladies. :) Katie (facebook)
  • Yeah that would work.. or try the teats that r shaped the same as nipples he may find it easier they r shorter and designed 4 breast feeding bubs. Bec (facebook)
  • My breastfed boy went 15 days without pooing - the Drs said it was not uncommon. When he finally did poo he was sooooo happy! That said if you are worried about it, a natural option that I have now come across is wearing Hazelwood - check out the Hazelwood Necklaces in The Amber Room. http://www.facebook.com/The0Amber0Room?ref=tsor www.theamberroom.com.au. • My daughter has had ongoing constipation problems since she was born. Diagnosed milk intolerance and put on soy milk at six months. Improved somewhat and put up with it for the next 12 to 18 months but with more solids less milk seemed to get worse. Finally put on Inner Health Plus for Kids and never looked back. Evidently not enough good bacteria in her gut which can happen if a caesarean birth.  Terri (facebook)
  • I used 10mls of straight prune juice just before giving my son his bottle, only needed to give it for about a month than he was right. Brodie (facebook)

My baby is having issues with constipation since starting solids. Was this an issue with your children and if so what helped?

  • Yes, we had the same problem with Emylee when she started eating. My Mum told me to put 1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar in her bottle. Only put it in 1 bottle per day though...we put it in every bottle for a whole day and she had diarrhoea for 2 days afterwards. She's had constipation a couple of times when we've tried her with different foods and the brown sugar has worked a treat :) Good luck xx Fiona (facebook)
  • lots of water - watered down fruit juice or milk if they’re not all fussed on water - watered down so they get used to the taste of water and don’t end up 'eating' too much during the day, also fruit juice is very sugary so best to water it right down for them. Fruit helps too. Samantha (facebook)
  • My son has chronic reflux so suffers with constipation often. Increase water helps soften stools. Warm baths and prune juice is great natural remedies. Keri (facebook)
  • My Son has had a few days here and there where he's been a bit constipated since starting solids, i put a teaspoon of brown sugar (not raw sugar! lol) into 50mls of cooled boiled water, give it to him to drink, all of it, and with the hour he has a proper poop! Works great. Also a nice warm (as warm as baby can handle) bath, i haven't had to do this but my Sister did for my Niece and she pooped in th bath after being constipated for a few days. And also be wary of fruit cos sometimes that can make them a bit constipated too. And juice also constipates them too. Steph (facebook)
  • Bananas bind them up, so stay away from that, lots of water an brown sugar in water, an a warm bath work great, and if you give prune juice, only a little bit Probly bout 60mls should do it a day. Lol Sian (facebook)
  • Depending on the age.... orange juice. Rebecca (facebook)
  • Warm water will help as will warm baths with massage of the bubby's tummy. Beck (facebook)
  • Bowel message for younger age, under 2, worked for us.  Rebecca (facebook)
  • Massage her tummy in a circle downward motion as if to guide the poop out. If that makes sense, it helps and usually feels good to my son. Just like we would if we were having poop issues. Be wary that they can still be backed up even if some is coming out. They get a blockage and small amounts can escape but they're still constipated. Keri (facebook)
  • My son has been the same so scary! I tried pears. Prune juice and brown sugar. The best has been just to up his wate0r intake after every meal. I was worried about him not wanting milk if he was having water but he still wants milk. I now have a sippy cup in the lounge room with cool boiled water and he helps himself. Good luck it can be scary. Kellee (facebook
  • I had the same problem but i found pre-made cartons of baby milk helped and califig which is all natural ingredients in it as its only oil of figs helped loads with my two girls xx Hannah (facebook)
  • My little man has been terribly constipated this week...tried a lot of things, massage, coloxyl, more water, then hubby gave him 60mls prune juice watered down with 60mls boiled water and he went the next day. He was so happy afterwards ! Erin (facebook)
  • my little girl had bad constipation when she started solids and i found giving her pureed fruit really helped, i used to blend up heaps of different things together like banana, peaches, avocado, kiwi fruit, apple, blueberries, raspberries, watermelon and rockmelon. the great part is you can make a big batch like a smoothie and freeze it in small containers and use when you need. Also coloxyl infant drops from the chemist really helped too! Sarah (facebook)
  • Tummy massage. Shellie (facebook)
  • I’m having the same problem my bubby is 8 months old, coloxyl is good but not good to give all the time. so i have been giving her watered down prune juice and she loves it. it works wonders.. so i usually try to give her some every 2-3 days apart from trin to keep her fluids up water and fruit every day.
